Victor Wembanyama has already built a reputation as one of the NBA’s most intimidating defenders, and the San Antonio Spurs star admits there is a small part of him that enjoys what his blocks do to opponents.
At 7ft 4in with extraordinary reach and timing, Wembanyama regularly shuts down shots most players think they have finished.
For him, the reaction from the player he just denied can be just as memorable as the block itself.

Victor Wembanyama says blocking NBA shots can feel funny
Love Magazine captured Wembanyama explaining how he sometimes reacts internally after swatting away an opponent’s attempt at the rim.
“It feels like ruining someone’s day. Sometimes it’s funny, because it’s like, ‘Why did they even try?'” Wembanyama said.
The comment reflects how dominant Wembanyama has already become as a rim protector despite being early in his NBA career.
Many players attack the basket expecting contact or a chance at a foul, but against Wembanyama, the outcome often ends with the ball flying in the opposite direction.
That ability to erase scoring opportunities has quickly made him one of the most feared defensive presences in the league.
Victor Wembanyama used criticism to build his defence
Wembanyama’s shot-blocking reputation did not arrive purely because of his height.
As a teenager in France, critics often questioned whether he focused too much on scoring rather than the defensive side of the game.
“That hurt my ego a lot. I felt like I had to earn [my place],” Wemby added.
The response was simple but effective. Wembanyama began treating defense as a personal challenge, determined to prove he could dominate on both ends of the floor.
That mindset showed up early in his international career when he started producing huge block numbers in youth tournaments, setting the foundation for the rim protection he now brings to the NBA.
