Leny Yoro was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity as Manchester United lost to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The 20-year-old centre-back received the first red card of his career after he put his arm across Atletico forward Jonathan David after he had been played through on goal.
Referee Glenn Nyberg initially awarded a free-kick against David after he fell on top of the ball and controlled it with his hands as he went to ground.
But the Swedish official was then summoned to the pitchside monitor by the VAR and reversed his decision, despite the light touch from Yoro across David’s chest.
Having conceded inside the opening 60 seconds in Madrid, Michael Carrick’s side went 2-0 down within minutes of Yoro’s sending off.
Ademola Lookman turned home the rebound after David drove into the box and saw his shot saved by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United had the momentum prior to Yoro’s red as they chased the equaliser, but being reduced to 10 men effectively ended the match as a contest.
Speaking on Prime Video, former United striker Wayne Rooney conceded that the “soft” red card left the visitors with “no chance” of salvaging a point.
United spurned several excellent chances after falling behind, with Bryan Mbeumo missing two opportunities and Bruno Fernandes striking the top of the crossbar.
The defeat means United have now gone five games without a victory, ahead of Sunday’s trip to rivals Leeds United in the Premier League.
Carrick’s side have only won twice from nine games this season, at home to promoted Ipswich in the Premier League and Champions League debutants Sabah.
