Wicked fans, get ready to return to Oz as Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, are all set to take over the big screen with Wicked: For Good. As the release date approaches, let’s explore the exciting details of the movie.

Wicked: Part One, released on 22 November 2024, is based on the 2003 Broadway stage musical, which, in turn, is inspired by the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire. Jon M Chu returns to helm the second instalment of the live-action film adaptation, which picks up where the first film left off.

On 20 October 2025, Colman Domingo was announced to be joining the star-studded cast led by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

The official release date for Wicked: For Good is 21 November 2025.

Right from the beginning of production, Chu had announced that Wicked would be split into two movies. It was quite a bold move for a musical adaptation, but also a rewarding one.

Wicked soared to become the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical of all time with a massive opening record of over USD 112.5 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Both parts were shot at the same time. Filming wrapped up in January 2024 after production faced a halt due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

Like the first movie, Wicked: For Good will be led by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as the two witches. This time, they might share fewer scenes, but audiences will still enjoy endearing duets, including the titular song, “For Good”, in which they reflect on how their relationship has evolved and how it has impacted them.

Since the sequel is an adaptation of the musical’s second act, most of the cast members from the first film will reprise their roles: Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond. Adam James will also appear in his role as Glinda’s father, a new role created for the movie.

Recently, Euphoria actor Colman Domingo announced that he has joined the cast and will be voicing the Cowardly Lion. The Cowardly Lion was a prominent character in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. In Wicked: Part One, he is the young cub Elphaba and Fiyero rescue after Dr Dillamond explains how the cub will never learn to speak if he remains caged. Now, in Wicked: For Good, the cub has grown into the Cowardly Lion who blames Elphaba for the hurdles he has faced.

An important character addition in Wicked: For Good is Dorothy Gale, seen very briefly at the start of Wicked. The blue-gingham-clad lady was seen walking down Oz’s iconic Yellow Brick Road alongside Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. However, only her backside was visible. Now, director Chu has hinted that she will have a bigger role in the second film. However, no actress is credited as playing Dorothy in Wicked’s credits, leaving the casting a mystery.

Behind the camera, Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, and Dana Fox wrote the screenplay for Chu’s movie. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen.

What do we know about the plot of Wicked: For Good?

Now this is spoiler territory.

Wicked: Part One stayed true to the Broadway production and ended with Erivo’s moving performance to “Defying Gravity” and a major cliffhanger. This is also how the musical’s first act ends on stage. With such uncanny resemblance, it can be assumed that Chu also has similar ideas for the second half.

Wicked: For Good will take place after the events of the first film. As Elphaba escapes the Wizard of Oz and Madame Morrible on her enchanted broomstick, she becomes the Wicked Witch of the East, while Glinda becomes the Good Witch and a ray of hope for her people. Fiyero is the current captain of the wizard’s guard. Morrible, having narrated a false account of the first act finale, declares that Glinda and Fiyero are engaged to calm a crowd worried about the Wicked Witch. Fiyero decides to look for Elphaba while she visits her sister Nessarose, the governor of Munchkinland.

Despite Elphaba’s rebellion and Glinda’s journey widening their gap, the two witches find their way back to each other for a short-lived reunion till Dorothy throws a bucket of water on the former.

With new songs and more adventures, the sequel is expected to become as big a hit as its predecessor.

What songs can we expect in Wicked: For Good?

In December 2023, Schwartz confirmed that two new songs were created for the movie narrative. Speaking to The Messenger, he said, “The new songs were written because of the demand of the story… The storytelling required it, and therefore they were created — the intention was that they were organic and not imposed on the movie.”

The titles of the new songs, “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”, were revealed along with the rest of the film’s soundtrack in September 2025. Here is the full tracklist.

“Everyday More Wicked”

“No Place Like Home”
