Kota Kinabalu: The ISN (National Sports Institute) Satellite Centre officially launched at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) here in Likas on Friday is set to have a strong impact on the State and country’s sports development ecosystem.

ISN Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vellapandian Pennusamy said this in his speech at the signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between ISN and UMS’ Faculty of Education and Sports Studies for the collaboration.

He said the centre will be able to offer expertise, support and performance management to the athletes.

“This initiative not only strengthens ISN’s position as the nation’s leader in sports science, but also opens up wider opportunities for athletes, coaches, and researchers in Sabah to gain access to world-class facilities and expertise,” he said.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Hj Mansor added that the initiative is not just a formal form of cooperation, but a very strategic platform to unite academic expertise, research resources, and joint commitment in advancing sports science, especially in Sabah and Borneo.

“This Satellite Centre opens up space for the faculty to strengthen teaching and learning programmes, expand research networks, and create more opportunities for student involvement in high-impact postgraduate research projects.

“I would also like to emphasise that the faculty is committed to ensuring that all forms of collaboration are not just on paper, but are truly implemented with our true seriousness and capabilities.

“We believe that through this close relationship, many things can be achieved including expert training, technology transfer and capacity building of local energy in the field of sports science,” he said.

Meanwhile also present at the ceremony were Dean of the Faculty of Education and Sports Studies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Soon Singh A/L Bikar Singh, Chairman of the ISN Board of Directors Datuk Chin Leng Sim @ Marina Chin, Head of ISN-UMS Satellite Centre Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Rozilee Wazir and other top officials.
