Starting 1 July 2025, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is rolling out a brand-new electricity tariff structure across Peninsular Malaysia.
According to the Energy Commission (ST), as reported by SoyaCincau on 21 June, this move aims to create a more “progressive and fair” system.
Who is affected?
Congratulations — TNB says 23 million users, especially those using less than 600kWh per month, you all are safe.
In fact, if your usage is low, you may get a slight reduction.
You will also enjoy a waiver on the RM10 monthly retail charge, a small but helpful discount for every single one of you.
At least that’s enough for a roadside nasi lemak, stationary, or parking.
BUT, households using more than 1500kWh per month could be charged more than before.
That’s because the bill is now broken into five components:
- Energy
- Capacity
- Network
- Retail
- Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA)
If you are wondering what AFA is, it’s the brand-new system to replace the current Imbalance Cost Pass‑Through (ICPT).
It automatically updates every month to track global fuel prices and that definitely affects how much you need to pay at the end of month.
In simple words, your electricity cost can swing up or down each month, just like our petrol prices.
Want to save more?
We got you!
Well, there is some good news for night owls, gamers, and EV owners, where TNB’s new Time-of-Use (ToU) scheme is here to help start from July.
With ToU, you get cheaper electricity during off-peak hours, including 10pm to 2pm on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.
It is perfect for charging your electric car while you sleep, watching K-dramas, or running your washing machine past midnight.
First things first, you’ll need a smart meter or a Current Transformer (CT) or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) meter to enjoy this offer.
To sign up, just drop by your nearest Kedai Tenaga and you’re good to go.
Also don’t forget, households using less than 1000kWh/month can enjoy rebates of up to 25 sen/kWh under TNB’s Energy Efficiency Incentive.
Want to Count Your Bill?
Still unsure if you will be saving or spending more?
No worries, TNB has released an official Bill Calculator so you can estimate your charges under the new system that is on the way.
Here’s a quick glance at the difference by SoyaCincau:
- 300kWh/month: RM71.00 → RM65.79
- 600kWh/month: RM219.80 → RM215.98
- 900kWh/month: RM408.70 → RM418.35
- 1,500kWh/month: RM778.71 → RM719.90
2,000kWh/month: RM1,298.25 → RM1,177.78
Just to remember, there’s one part the calculator can’t predict — the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA).
Every ringgit saved is a nasi lemak earned, so what’s your plan for July?
