Jannik Sinner is out of Wimbledon after struggling with illness in a five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev, who booked a rematch with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.

World No 1 Sinner started the match in control but had his blood pressure taken and left Centre Court for 11 minutes after being behind in the third. While the Italian battled to force the fifth, the World No 5 Medvedev showed his class to win the decider.

Medvedev’s victory avenges his defeat to Sinner in the Australian Open final at the start of the year, when the Russian was two sets up. He will face Alcaraz in the semi-finals for the second year in a row, after the defending champion came from behind to beat Tommy Paul.

In the women’s singles, Donna Vekic ended the run of qualifier Lulu Sun as the Croatian raced away with a 5-7 6-4 6-1 victory to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final. The world No 37 will face Jasmine Paolini, who destroyed Emma Navarro 6-2 6-1 to become the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Jasmine Paolini makes history for Italy with dominant quarter-final victory

Jasmine Paolini kept the Italian flag flying at Wimbledon by thrashing Emma Navarro to reach the semi-finals.

Centre Court was still reeling from the defeat suffered by Italy’s poster boy and world number one Jannik Sinner, at the hands of Daniil Medvedev, when Paolini entered the fray.

The 28-year-old seventh seed duly dispatched American Navarro 6-2 6-1 to become the first Italian woman to make the last four in SW19.

“It’s amazing to get the win on this special court and I’m so happy to be in the semi-final,” she said. “It’s so special, a dream to be here in this position. I was watching finals on this court when I was a kid, it’s strange to be here.”

Before this year Paolini had never won a match on grass, or gone beyond the second round of a major tournament. But she was a surprise runner-up at the French Open last month and has proved that run was no flash in the pan by standing on the brink of a second final in a matter of weeks.

Donna Vekic eclipses Lulu Sun to reach first Wimbledon semi-final

Tuesday 9 July 2024 20:54

Luke Baker

In the women’s quarter-finals, an emotional Donna Vekic ended the fairytale Wimbledon run of qualifier Lulu Sun to reach her first grand slam semi-final.

SW19 sensation Sun won the first set and looked on course to become only the second woman to come through qualifying and reach the last four. But Vekic, the 28-year-old from Croatia, took a tight second set and then ran away with the third for a 5-7 6-4 6-1 victory.

Sun had lit up the All England Club with her fearless tennis, even though she knocked out home favourite Emma Raducanu in the previous round, but Vekic is a remarkable story in her own right as she reached her first grand slam semi-final at the 43rd attempt.

“It was a really tough match, she played unbelievable, I feel like she really pushed me to my limits,” said a tearful Vekic. “I felt like I was dying out there in the first two sets but I just kept going, hoping to have a chance and it came in the end. I have a full box of people there and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Jannik Sinner explains illness during Wimbledon quarter-final defeat

Luke Baker

Jannik Sinner has revealed he was experiencing dizziness out on court during his five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The world No 1 was clearly under the weather from the start and, with the match at one set apiece, left the court at the start of the third set for more than 10 minutes.

A doctor checked his pulse and blood pressure and thought the Italian returned and continued to battle - forcing a deciding fifth set - Medvedev prevailed after four hours of action.

Speaking in his press conference afterwards, the 22-year-old revealed how he was feeling out on court.

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini reaches semi-finals

Tuesday 9 July 2024 19:14

Jamie Braidwood

Jasmine Paolini is an incredible story. Before this year’s French Open, hadn’t gone further than the second round of a grand slam - but she reached the final. Before this year’s Wimbledon, she’d never won a match on grass - but is now into the semi-finals. The clay to grass transition is the hardest to make, but she is flying.

At 28, she’s having the best season of her career.

Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-1 Emma Navarro

Wow! Incredible from Paolini to destroy Navarro and reach her first Wimbledon semi-final! She becames the first Italian woman to reach a Wimbledon semi-final, after a ruthless thrashing of the American who had looked so impressive against Coco Gauff two days ago. She heads off Centre Court very quickly.

But how about that from Paolini. After reaching the French Open final last month, the 28-year-old is breaking new ground again on grass. She will face Donna Vekic on Thursday for a place in the final. Vekic will also be playing in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz returns to semi-finals

Tuesday 9 July 2024 19:02

Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz speaking after his 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Tommy Paul

“He’s had a great season on grass, he’s the Queen’s champion and was playing well here. Today was difficult match for me. The first set and start of the second was like playing on clay, long rallies, 10-15 shots. When I lost the first set it was difficult for me but I knew it was a long journey. I’m glad I found the solutions.

I always believe I can come back. If I’m struggling I believe I can find solutions. At grand slams, I have more time to recover. I believe in myself all the time.”

On facing Daniil Medvedev again in the semi-finals

“Well he’s a great player. Same semi-final as last year. Hopefully I get the same result. He just won against Jannik Sinner, the best player right now, so he is in good shape. It’s going to be a difficult one but I’m going to enjoy”.

On Spain vs France tonight...

“I’ve got enough nerves today in the match, more tonight. It’s another big match. I’m going to enjoy for sure!”

Carlos Alcaraz 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 Tommy Paul

Look who’s back in the Wimbedon semi-finals! Carlos Alcaraz recovers from a set down, and a 75-minute epic at that, to beat Tommy Paul and return to the last four of the Championships.

He will face Daniil Medvedev on Friday, who beat Jannik Sinner in five sets earlier today. Alcaraz beat Medvedev in straight-sets last year.

Unwell Jannik Sinner knocked out of Wimbledon in four-hour marathon as Daniil Medvedev remains ruthless

Tuesday 9 July 2024 18:50

Kieran Jackson

Kieran Jackson on Centre Court

Rule out Daniil Medvedev at your peril. That was the message sent to the rest of the draw by the freakishly outlandish but effective world number five, who ripped up the formbook on quarter-finals day at Wimbledon. Sure, Jannik Sinner was under the weather, far from oneself, but the level throughout remained high and it was Medvedev who held his nerve.

For two intoxicating sets of full-throttle baseline tennis, there was little to choose between these two. But then it was the Italian– six years younger at 22 – whose health deteriorated on tennis’ biggest stage. The world No 1 left the court for 10 minutes but this was no injury. As a doctor checked his pulse and blood pressure, Sinner looked a man absolutely spent, his face white and movement unusually dawdle.

But he returned, a second wave came and as the adrenaline kicked in, the momentum swung back and forth. Sinner, commendably, stretched it five sets. But after a sludging contest of exactly four hours, it was Medvedev who emerged victorious, sealing a berth in the Wimbledon semi-finals – with a 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6 6-3 win – for the second straight year where, again, he will meet Carlos Alcaraz.

The level of Alcaraz-Paul is stunning.

Like Carlos Alcaraz, Jasmine Paolini is bidding to make back-to-back grand slam finals at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Finally, Alcaraz holds as a Paul forehand loops long! Big hold from Alcaraz and he knows it.

Wimbledon 2024: Daniil Medvedev clinches five-set thriller versus Jannik Sinner

Tuesday 9 July 2024 18:01

Jamie Braidwood

Daniil Medvedev after beating Jannik Sinner:

“I knew if I want to beat Jannik it needs to be a tough match. He’s not anymore a guy you can beat easy. I felt at one moment He wasn’t feeling good but I knew it could get away. He started playing better. I’m happy I managed to still stay at a high level. It was great points and a great match. I’m happy to win and I’m looking forward.”

On playing against Sinner while he struggles:

“It’s actually very tough. One moment I could feel he didn’t move that well. It’s always tricky because you wanna play more points to make him suffer a bit more … in a good way.

“At the same time you know that he at one point is gonna say ‘ok I can’t run anymore. So I’m gonna go full power.’ And that’s what he did. He had set points to win the 3rd set. In a way I’d maybe prefer to not have this situation. Everything is well when it ends well. So I’m pretty happy.”

It could prove very costly indeed. A fortuitously clip of the tape and a great drop shot put Sinner 15-30 in front before Medvedev responds with that killer serve out wide - his 15th ace of the match.

Sinner then pings one wide as Medvedev comes up to the net allowing the Russian the chance to close out the game. He can’t do it in the next rally. Deuce.

Medvedev can’t get over the line. Every time he moves to advantage, Sinner reins him back in. It takes a fifth deuce for Medvedev to get through Sinner’s resistance and complete the break of serve!

Jannik Sinner double faults and puts Medvedev three break points up.

The Italian saves the first one with an ace and his fastest serve of the match. He then dominates the next rally and smashes a winner down the line to save the second one.

Just as easily as Medvedev did, Sinner closes out the game from deuce.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz hits back in second set after scare

Tuesday 9 July 2024 17:12

Luke Baker

After the hammer blow of losing that opening set, Carlos Alcaraz understandably looked slightly dazed at the start of the second set. He double faulted to bring up two break points in his very first service game and then fired a routine forehand wide to gift-wrap and early break for Tommy Paul.

But if there was any danger of another set suddenly slipping away from him, that was immediately expelled as he refocused and immediately brought up three break points of his own on the Paul serve. The American saved the first two but netted on the third and we're now back on serve at 2-2 as the defending champions tries to fight his way back into this quarter-final.

Wimbledon 2024: Jannik Sinner* 7-6, 4-6 6-7 6-2 0-1 Daniil Medvedev

Okay, a fifth and final set. Daniil Medvedev to serve. He opens up with a fault before getting drawn into a testing rally. A low backhand from the Russian skims over the net and Jannik Sinner punts his return into the tape.

Sinner takes the next point but a forehand cross court from Medvedev sends him back into the lead. An ace follows but Medvedev then goes long.

Sinner then forces the game to deuce with a great backhand down the line and a drop shot volley.

Medvedev closes out the game with two strong serves.

It’s been a remarkable first set on Court 1 and, after one hour and 12 minutes, Tommy Paul breaks Carlos Alcaraz at the perfect time to triumph 7-5!

The standard of play has been incredible and almost every game has gone close but it’s the underdog who comes out on top after that marathon set. Alcaraz has been in this position before but, against an inspired opponent, he’ll need to come up with some answers pretty soon.

Wimbledon 2024: Carlos Alcaraz v Tommy Paul on serve in an epic first set

Tuesday 9 July 2024 16:33

Luke Baker

It has been an absolutely epic match out on Court 1 so far where defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is taking on Queen’s winner Tommy Paul.

The hitting from both men has been out of this world, enrapturing the crowd with their incredible athleticism and power. We’ve had too many remarkable points to count and a string of marathon games, starting with the very first where Paul saved four break points en route to a hold. To make it 3-3, Alcaraz was forced to play nine deuces and the first six games took 40 minutes of match-time.

Both men traded breaks early in the set but Paul has just battled to another hold, so we’re still on serve at 4-3 to the American as we approach the 50-minute mark of action.

Jannik Sinner has won 10 of the last 11 points notching off three games in a row. Medvedev, who served to win the set, is now serving to save it.

Sinner takes the first point, Medvedev the second.

The Russian then comes up to the net and with a couple of volleys wins the third point too. The Russian then challenges a call on the baseline but it’s shown to be in and the game is all square at 30-30.

Sinner unleashes a cross court forehand which Medvedev pumps too long. The set point disappears quickly after an ace and Medvedev moves to advantage when Sinner drills a forehand wide of play.

Error from Medvedev, back to deuce.

An exquisite drop shot-volley combo from Sinner leaves him with another set point but he smokes a backhand into the net.

This crucial game goes to a fourth deuce before Medvedev manages to secure the hold. The third set is going to a tiebreaker.

This is a must hold game for Jannik Sinner or else he needs to win two sets in a row to get through this match. He starts wonderfully and takes the first two points before Medvedev nails a backhand passing winner.

Good from Sinner. A competent hold of serve. He needs to break now to keep this set alive.

Sinner has his head in his hands as he talks to the physio and doctor that have come out onto court. He looks shaken up and has had to leave court.

From the initial check up it looks like an illness/medical issue rather than the usual signs of injury that athletes tend to show.
