KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s men’s hockey team, the Speedy Tigers, may have suffered a 7-1 semi-final defeat to England in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt, but their ambition of reaching the World Cup remains very much alive.
Thanks to their strong world ranking, Malaysia retain a significant advantage over rivals Wales and Poland in the race for the final qualification slot.
The two qualifying tournaments in Ismailia and Santiago, Chile, will determine the remaining seven spots at the 2026 World Cup, with the top three teams from each tournament automatically securing their places.
So far, the finalists in Ismailia, Pakistan and England have already confirmed their World Cup berths. In Santiago, France and Ireland have also secured their tickets after advancing to the final.
Malaysia now face Japan in the third-place playoff in Ismailia. Victory in that match would guarantee Sarjit Singh’s side an automatic spot at the World Cup, removing any dependence on results from Chile.
Even if Malaysia fall short against Japan, their chances remain strong. The final, seventh slot will go to the highest-ranked team in the world standings among the two sides that lose their respective third-place playoffs across the two tournaments.
Currently, Malaysia sit 14th in the world with 2,207.46 points, comfortably ahead of Wales (15th with 2,098.71 points) and Poland (20th with 1,873.98 points).
This ranking advantage means Malaysia are likely to secure the final World Cup berth even in the event of defeat to Japan.
In a brief WhatsApp message, the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) said it is waiting for an official announcement from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) before confirming the team’s qualification.
“On paper, based on the current world rankings, if Malaysia finish fourth, we would still qualify for the World Cup.
“If we finish fourth, Malaysia would still fill the seventh slot, which is the final qualification berth.
“As for the MHC, we prefer to wait for the official announcement from the FIH tonight to confirm Malaysia’s qualification,” the confederation said. - March 7, 2026
