The Foreign Ministry says it is verifying reports of a body found in Trishuli that may be tied to a 23-member Malaysian tour group hit by floods.
PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Ministry (KLN) is seeking confirmation from Nepalese authorities following the discovery of a body believed to be that of a Nepalese national who may be linked to a Malaysian tour group caught up in floods along the Nepal-Tibet border last week.
According the ministry said it was aware of reports circulating on social media concerning an individual believed to be connected to a group affected by the flash floods in Nepal.
“The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu is seeking confirmation from the relevant authorities in Nepal. The ministry will not speculate on the reports while the verification process is ongoing,” it reportedly said.
The ministry said providing verified information directly to the affected families remained its priority.
“KLN respectfully urges the media to allow the verification process to take its course and to respect the privacy of the families involved.
“Any developments that can be made public will be shared once the information has been verified,” it said.
Earlier, a body believed to be that of a Nepalese national was reportedly found in the Trishuli area on Sunday and was said to be linked to a Leaf Holidays tour group comprising 23 Malaysians.
The body was reportedly discovered about 75 to 80km from the group’s last known location.
Family representative Dr R. Manivannan was reported to have said that authorities were awaiting the arrival of the victim’s relatives to carry out identification and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing to confirm the person’s identity.
He said unofficial information about the discovery had been received from an agent in Nepal after photographs of the deceased reportedly appeared to resemble one of the members of the tour group.
