Lisa Leslie did not hold back after WNBA general managers picked Paige Bueckers over Caitlin Clark as the player they would rather build around.
The survey result created a debate because it split basketball value from business value. Bueckers may have impressed executives on the court, but Clark remains the league’s biggest commercial force.
That is where Leslie pushed back hard. To her, any front office ignoring Clark’s ability to move money, tickets, and attention is missing the job completely.

Caitlin Clark’s snub gets a brutal Lisa Leslie warning
As Sporting News shared, Lisa Leslie reacted sharply to the WNBA GM survey that placed Paige Bueckers ahead of Caitlin Clark as a franchise-building pick.
“All those GMs [are] probably going to get fired,” Leslie said.
The survey asked general managers which player they would choose to start a franchise. Bueckers led the category with 33% of the vote, while Clark received 20%.
That result was a major shift from the previous year, when Clark was the clear choice for many executives.
Part of the change came from Bueckers’ rise with the Dallas Wings and Clark’s injury-limited 2025 season. But Leslie clearly believed the voting ignored the bigger picture.
Caitlin Clark’s effect makes GMs’ answer look risky
Leslie’s argument was simple. A general manager is not just building a roster, but also building a business.
“This is a money business, and the money is about Caitlin Clark. Never in the history of the WNBA, have we had a player force teams to get into larger arenas,” she continued.
“I’ve never seen that happen. If you’re the GM, you’re obviously supposed to be bringing in money. That’s revenue. I’m going with Caitlin Clark,” Leslie concluded.
That is the part of the debate where Clark separates herself. Her games have driven bigger crowds, stronger ticket demand, record merchandise interest, and arena changes across the league.
Several teams have moved Fever matchups to larger venues because Clark’s presence creates a different level of demand.
Bueckers may be the cleaner basketball answer for some executives after her strong start in Dallas. But Leslie’s point is that Clark is the stronger franchise answer because she changes the entire financial equation.
That is why the 33% vote for Bueckers became controversial. In Leslie’s eyes, passing on Clark means passing on the player who has already changed what WNBA business can look like.
