Woman charged with abandoning newborn at hospital

TAWAU: A 24-year-old woman was charged with abandoning her newborn which died at the Tawau Hospital, last month.

However, no plea was recorded from Mazidah Minggo after the charge was read before Sessions Court Judge Judge Rosli Ahmad.

Mazidah is accused of abandoning her newborn and the act caused the baby’s death.

The offence allegedly took place inside the female public toilet at the Emergency and Trauma Department of the Tawau Hospital between Oct 13 this year at 5.20pm and Oct 14 at 7.10am.

The court set Dec 5 for mention pending the chemist’s report and no bail was offered to Mazidah.

The offence under Section 309 B of the Penal Code carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and fine, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Suhaimi Suriana appeared for the prosecution.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old soldier claimed trial to molesting his mother-in-law’s female worker.

Muhammad Afiq Ikhwan Mohamad Zukhi made the plea before Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin.

He allegedly molested the 21-year-old Indonesian at 5am on May 3 this year at a house, here.

Muhammad was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years, and with fine, or with whipping, or with any of two such punishments, on conviction.

The court set Dec 4 for mention and Muhammad was released on bail of RM4,000 with two local sureties as well as report to the investigating officer of the case once a month.

Muhammad was also warned not to tamper with the prosecution witnesses, especially the alleged victim.

Prosecuting Officer ASP Jeffrey Kadisun prosecuted while Muhammad was represented by counsel Jhassary P. Kang from National Legal Aid Foundation.
