
PASIR MAS - A 56-year-old schoolteacher was pulled to safety after falling into a 5.49-metre well behind her kitchen in Kampung Batal, Chicha Tinggi here on Saturday.
The victim, Sarini Md Yusuf, managed to hold herself up for about half an hour with both feet braced against the well's structure, keeping her above the water level until help arrived.
Pasir Mas Fire and Rescue Department operations commander senior fire officer I Asraf Mat Naizi said the department received the emergency call at 7.50am, dispatching a Fire Rescue Tender and a Triton four-wheel-drive vehicle with six personnel to the scene.
He said the team arrived six minutes later and found the woman still in the well.
"The rescue operation was carried out using special equipment including a rope system to bring the victim out safely.
"The victim was brought out conscious and suffered only minor injuries before being handed over to Ministry of Health (MOH) personnel for further action," he said when contacted.
He said the operation was brought fully under control at 8.37am and ended at 9.05am.
He added that the cause of the incident remains under investigation. The woman is believed to have fallen into the well, located inside her house, at the time of the incident.
Asraf said the victim was later taken to Hospital Pasir Mas for treatment.
