A 45-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in the Dari locality of Dharamsala town on Tuesday morning. The woman, who was working on an outsourced basis with the Jal Shakti Department, was found hanging inside her room, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Paloma Karki, had reportedly been living at her parental home. According to family members, she had been under severe mental stress due to prolonged family disputes and alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws.

The police recovered a suicide note from the spot. While investigators are examining its contents, family members alleged that the woman had been facing mental and emotional harassment for years. They claimed she had repeatedly spoken about difficulties in her marital life, financial pressures and disputes relating to her child.

Relatives alleged that she had been struggling with both personal and financial challenges and was undergoing considerable emotional distress. They alleged that woman’s husband failed to fulfil his responsibilities towards the family and lived separately with his mother, leaving her and their son to manage on their own.

The body was shifted to the Zonal Hospital, Dharamshala, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. The body was later handed over to family members for the last rites.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kangra Rajinder Singh Jaswal said a suicide note had been recovered and the matter was under investigation. “A 45-year-old woman reportedly died by suicide today early morning in Dari locality. A suicide note has been recovered from the room and all aspects of the case are being investigated,” he said, adding that a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered.

Statements of family members and other persons connected with the case were being recorded and further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation, he said.
