Kota Kinabalu: A 24-year-old woman was fined a total of RM10,000 for allowing two illegal immigrants to stay at her premises.

Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Emi Elia Elias after she pleaded guilty.

Emi was found permitting the two Filipinos, aged 22 and 27, who did not have any documents, to be at the premises at 12.15pm on Nov 22, 2022 at SN Barbershop in Universiti Utama Square Lorong Utama 2, Telipok, near here.

The offence under Section 55E(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.

The court ordered Emi to pay RM5,000 or one month’s jail for each illegal immigrant involved.

During mitigation, Emi asked for leniency as she had pleaded guilty to the charge and applied for the fine to be paid by instalment.

However, Prosecuting Officer Abdul Latif from the Immigration Department urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence so as to give a lesson not only to Emi but the public at large.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man was fined RM5,000 or spend a month in prison for also allowing a Filipino to stay in the place which was under his care.

Alexander Syvester Chuan admitted to permitting the illegal immigrant to stay at the premises at 4.05pm on Oct 27, 2022 at Bellas Sunset in Warisan Square, Tun Fuad Stephens, here.
