PAPAR: A 70-year-old woman died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Kota Kinabalu, two days after an accident along Km 42, Jalan Kimanis-Keningau.

District Police Chief DSP Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the incident took place around 1.30pm on Saturday when a driver along with eight passengers lost control of a Toyota Avanza while heading towards Kota Kinabalu from Keningau, after a wedding.

“Based on the driver’s statement, the vehicle experienced brake failure while heading downhill, causing it to skid off the road and into a hillside near the road shoulder before landing in the bushes nearby,” he said.

Kamaruddin said the vehicle spun out of control before turning turtle which led to injuries to the driver and passengers, including the victim who suffered serious injuries to the chest.

“The victim was rushed to Papar Hospital after being extricated from the vehicle by other passengers before she was referred to QEH for further treatment.

“However, she was pronounced dead by medical officers around 12.30pm on Monday while the passengers and driver were reported to be in stable condition,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
