Woman killed in Tawau crash

TAWAU: A 24-year-old Indonesian woman died after she was thrown from a car during an accident at Batu 16, Jalan Apas, here, on Wednesday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the woman, who was a front passenger, succumbed to severe injuries at Tawau Hospital about six hours after the 3.26pm incident.

“The victim sustained injuries to her face, body and chest,” he said.

Rosdi said the accident involved a Proton Saga driven by a 26-year-old Indonesian woman who was travelling from Semporna towards Tawau.

Initial police investigations found that the driver was believed to have briefly fallen asleep at the wheel before losing control of the vehicle.

“The vehicle veered onto the left road shoulder, struck a tree and overturned into a ditch,” he said.

Investigations also revealed that the driver did not possess a valid driving licence and that the vehicle did not belong to her but another friend.

The driver, who sustained injuries to her face and neck, was also taken to Tawau Hospital for further treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
