A 44-YEAR-OLD clerk in Kuala Terengganu has fallen victim to an online part-time job scam, losing RM94,569 of her personal savings after being lured by promises of commission-based earnings.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor confirmed that the victim lodged a report at the Kuala Terengganu Police Station at 4.49 pm on Sunday.

According to Azli, the incident began on 13 November around 6 pm when the victim, at her home in the district, received a WhatsApp message offering opportunities to generate additional income.

She was subsequently added to a Telegram group linked to a “finance department” and a “RM205 mission task” group.

“The victim was given an explanation about part-time work opportunities where she was required to provide initial capital, which was supposedly to be returned along with commission. As an agent, she was promised a 20 percent commission on the capital invested for each task,” he said.

The victim was then instructed to select items to purchase as part of her “assignments” and to make payments to the bank accounts provided by the syndicate.

Between 15 and 20 November, she transferred a total of RM94,569 to several accounts.

“She was later asked to make an additional payment of RM50,000 to recover all her previous contributions, but she did not proceed with this payment as she had yet to receive her initial funds or promised commissions,” Azli said.

Only after failing to recover her money did the victim realise she had been defrauded. Azli confirmed that the funds lost were entirely from her own savings and that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Authorities have warned the public to exercise caution with unsolicited online job offers, especially those requiring upfront payments. - November 24, 2025
