KUALA LUMPUR – A 27-year-old woman who brandished a knife at the Rain Rave Water Music Festival in Bukit Bintang last week has been sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta for psychiatric evaluation.

Police identified the woman as Shannon Anne-Ooi who was charged this morning with carrying an offensive weapon in a public place for an unlawful purpose under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

If convicted, she faces a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, whipping, or both.

However, the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court today ordered that she undergo psychiatric assessment after concerns were raised over her mental health condition, said Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam in a statement today.

The court ordered a 30-day evaluation and fixed June 4 for case mention.

The inaugural Rain Rave Water Music Festival, an outdoor party, was held at the Bukit Bintang intersection in front of the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping mall from April 30 to May 2.

Anne-Ooi was recorded on video brandishing a knife in the middle of a crowd during one of the nights of the festival.

The video, which has since gone viral, showed several members of the public intervening and  disarming her. She was subsequently arrested by police and remanded for further investigation.

According to reports, over 80,000 people attended over the three days of the event which was aimed at boosting tourism. Other than the knife incident, the event was considered a success. - May 4, 2026
