Jagadhri District Court Additional Sessions Judge Sukhda Pritam has sentenced a woman to rigorous life imprisonment for killing her three-year-old daughter.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Maninder Kaur (36) of Kuldeep Nagar here. In default of the payment of fine, the convict will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.

On the complaint of the accused’s husband, Kulwinder Singh, a case was registered against Maninder under Section 302 of the IPC at Gandhi Nagar police station in 2022.

During the investigation, Maninder told the police that she married Kulwinder in 2012 and they had two children–an eight-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter. “My husband works in a private company in Gurugram and would visit home occasionally. During college days, I was in a relationship with a man from Ambala and we remained in touch even after marriage,” the accused told the police.

She said her husband came to know of it and this led to frequent quarrels.

She said she wanted to live freely with the other man, so they decided to do away with the children.

Police documents stated that she left home with the children on August 9, 2022 and reached Amritsar, where she strangled her daughter with a dupatta in a hotel room and later abandoned the body outside a gurdwara.

As per the police record, the woman confessed to killing her daughter and that she also intended to kill her son.
