PUCHONG - Former Subang MP Wong Chen has apologised to his constituents for resigning before Parliament's dissolution.
However, Wong stressed that he had no regrets over his more than 13 years as an MP, saying he had served the people of Subang diligently since being elected in 2013.
“Resigning one year early (before Parliament automatically dissolves) is what I would apologise to the people for.
“I could have waited until Parliament was dissolved. It could be three months from now, six months from now, but it is expected next year. So, resigning one year earlier as a member of Parliament, yes, I apologise for that,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Bersama headquarters in Puchong here today.
Wong said his apology was solely for leaving the parliamentary post before the end of its term and not for his record in Parliament.
“I am not apologising for the last 14 years for the work I have done. My record is clear, my conscience is absolutely clear,” he said.
Wong resigned as Subang MP on Monday before quitting PKR and joining Bersama today, saying the decision was necessary to uphold the second part of the oath he took as an MP — to defend the Federal Constitution and democracy.
“But I have to resign for the second part of the oath I took, which is to defend democracy and defend the Federal Constitution,” he said.
Wong said he decided to join Bersama because he believed the party could offer voters a progressive, multiracial political alternative amid what he described as Malaysia's “very toxic” political environment.
“I am taking a stand to join Bersama in this very toxic political environment we face now, to give my two dear friends here a chance to lead a progressive Malaysia, a multiracial Malaysia, and to give an alternative for the people,” he said.
Despite no longer being the MP, Wong said he would continue working in Subang and planned to set up an office there to remain engaged with his former constituents.
He said the process of removing the signage from his former parliamentary office was already under way, as he did not want to give the impression that he remained their elected representative.
“I really need to go on the ground to explain to people, and I need to apologise for sure. There are still a lot of people angry,” he said.
Wong said he had received largely positive feedback on social media following his resignation, although he acknowledged that some constituents remained unhappy with his decision.
“On my Facebook and my social media, I think I receive about 80 to 90 per cent positive comments. But you can never please everybody 100 percent,” he said.
Asked whether he would seek to contest Subang again under Bersama, Wong said the decision would ultimately be made by the party.
“But the presumption is, of course, I will be working in Subang. I am going to set up an office in Subang also,” he said.
Wong was first elected as the Subang MP in 2013 and went on to serve the constituency for more than a decade.
He was among several PKR MPs who attended the launch of Bersama, founded by former ministers Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, in May. - August 12, 2026
