Wong Kar Gee wins Malaysia’s 55th gold at the ASEAN Para Games with a record 6.83m long jump, leading a clean sweep of the podium

MALAYSIAN para-athlete Wong Kar Gee delivered a record-breaking performance to secure the nation’s 55th gold medal at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games.

He soared to victory in the Men’s Long Jump T12 event with a superb leap of 6.83 metres, setting a new Games record.

Kar Gee led an all-Malaysian podium, finishing ahead of compatriots Ahmad Zuaiman Shamsuddin, who cleared 6.35m, and Muhammad Nazri Hazmi Mohan with 6.31m.

“This is a very special moment,” Kar Gee told reporters after his win.

He expressed happiness at achieving the national contingent’s target of 55 gold medals, calling it a significant number.

The victory held deep personal significance for the athlete, who faced a challenging competition at the 2023 edition in Cambodia.

He was forced to compete in a different category due to a classification issue and finished second while carrying injuries.

Kar Gee also shared his ambition to surpass his personal best of 7.22m, set in Beijing in 2019, later this year.

“I hope to break it later this year once my training reaches peak form,” he added.

The national contingent had targeted a total haul of 181 medals, including 55 gold, at the Games.

Malaysia finished fourth overall at the Cambodia 2023 edition with 50 gold, 38 silver and 35 bronze medals.
