A friend created this Chinese New Year e-greeting for me to share with all my friends. And I am doing exactly that.
With each new year, regardless of our creed or colour, we always look forward to that which is good. We want to forget our bad experiences and start the new year afresh. That is why many buy new clothes, new shoes or even sport a new hairstyle or haircut. We brighten our houses with bright red lanterns and decorations. And we wish all our friends and relatives, “Xin Nian Kuai Le”.
As a nation, we also want this year to bring us great joy, happiness and prosperity. We want to keep moving on towards progress and prosperity. To achieve that we all need to learn from our past mistakes and build on trust and hope. These elements (trust and hope) are crucial for strong, healthy relationships and help us all to move on with a sense of purpose. When trust and hope are present, we can be resilient and positive even when challenges come our way.
To me, my trust and hope is in my God. Whenever I see the rainbow in the sky, I remember God’s promises (Gen 9:12) to me as an individual as well as to my nation, Malaysia. As I hang up the red cloth or ‘cai kee’ at my main door posts, I remember God’s instructions to his people long ago (Exodus 12:1-10). The brightly lit lanterns of red and yellow also reminds me of the bright days and joy that is ahead of me. The season of celebration and festivity is a taste of what is ahead if I, as an individual or we, as a nation, choose to trust and hope.
So, my fellow Malaysians, let us all build on trust and hope. Then we will all be filled with joy and peace.
