Kota Kinabalu: Sepanggar Umno Chief Datuk Yakub Khan denied allegations of the existence of two factions within Sabah Umno, dismissing them as mere speculation.

The Umno Supreme Council member acknowledged that differences in opinion exist within the party but stressed that this is a normal occurrence in any political organisation. According to him, differing viewpoints are also present among the leadership of the ruling party without necessarily implicating any division.

“That is merely a perception. In Umno, differences in opinion are common and happen in every political party. Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) also faces differing views, but that does not necessarily reflect division or issues. In today’s political climate, too many outsiders act as political analysts,” he said.

He emphasised that Sabah Umno remains strong, motivated and ready to face the elections.

Asked about Sabah Umno’s readiness to contest solo in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17), Yakub reiterated that the party is prepared for any possibility.

“Regardless of the situation, Sabah Umno is always ready. If we have to contest solo, we will still fight,” he said.

Regarding Sabah Umno’s political cooperation with any party in PRN17, he said the decision would be entirely up to the party leadership and they would abide by whatever decision is made.

Yakub, who is also Karambunai Assemblyman, denied allegations that the aid provided to fire victims in Kampung Likas was a “sweetener” for PRN17.

He stressed that the contribution was made purely on humanitarian grounds, with no hidden agenda.

“If we want to talk about ‘sweeteners’ for elections, the Government itself has provided many forms of assistance to the B40 group through budgets and other initiatives, particularly this year. So, such accusations are up to those who make them,” he said.
