
The district police have arrested a suspected shooter allegedly linked to gangster Noni Rana after an encounter near a village in Yamunanagar.
The accused has been identified as Aman of Goela Khurd village in Panipat district.
He was allegedly involved in the firing incident that took place at the residence of a former sarpanch of Bhure Ka Majra village on April 21.
According to police officials, the CIA-II team of the district police had received information that one of the suspects involved in the Bhure Ka Majra firing was near Kulpur village of Yamunanagar district and planning to commit a crime.
The police teams subsequently started checking vehicles on checkpoints set up at different places in the district on Tuesday night.
During the operation, they noticed a suspicious youth riding a motorcycle near Kulpur village.
“When the police team reached near the suspected person, he opened fire. The police retaliated in self defence. During the exchange of fire, the accused sustained a bullet injury in his leg, after which he was overpowered and taken into custody,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajat Gulia told mediapersons.
He said that the injured accused was later admitted to Civil Hospital, Yamunanagar for treatment.
“Both sides fired around 12 to 15 rounds during the encounter. The police also recovered a weapon and the motorcycle used by the accused from the spot,” said Gulia.
Police officials said that efforts were under way to trace the other suspects who were involved in the firing at the former sarpanch’s house.
