Kota Kinabalu: An open-air swimming pool and outdated gymnastics equipment are among the main issues faced at the District Sports Complex, said Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin.
He said the swimming pool is still actively used by children and school students, but the lack of a roof leaves users exposed to the hot weather at all times, which is not suitable, especially for training session during the day and school holidays.
George also raised concerns about the gymnastics gym at the complex, which still uses old and worn-out equipment, posing safety risks for young athletes.
“The gymnastics equipment has never been replaced for a long time. We are worried this could lead to injuries. These athletes need a safe and proper training place,” he said.
He said Sandakan had produced many talented young athletes, especially in swimming and gymnastics, but without good facilities, it is difficult to develop their potential.
“I hope the State Ministry of Youth and Sports can come down to see the situation themselves and provide funds for repairs” he said.
“Sports facilities are not just for athlete development, but also for public health and well-being.
“The complex is always full of people, especially during weekends, showing that it is a vital facility truly used by the Sandakan community.
“The government has a responsibility to ensure such facilities are in good condition for the benefit of the people,” he said.
