As an idiom, "If you rewrite history, you change your version of past events so as to make yourself look better than you would if the truth was told."
Similarly, as Ibrahim Ali said when commenting on Anwar: the Untold Story, "This is history, you can't add and remove as you please. You can make things up, but this does not mean that they are facts. When you dig a little deeper, people will find out."
MalaysiaNow reports that Ibrahim Ali gave a speech at the Sultan Sulaiman Club over a decade ago and the recording went viral on social media during the same week when "Anwar" the movie opened in cinemas, nationwide.
But Ibrahim stands by what he said about Anwar then and is not likely to change or withdraw what he told the audience at the Sulaiman Club then. Why would he?
"I wish him (Anwar) all the best, and I hope that his ambitions have been achieved. But I don't know how he is going to erase the things he has been involved in."
Ibrahim is right. Anwar or anybody else, for that matter, will not be able to rewrite history or erase events that really happened then. They are now part of the nation's history. It would be next to impossible to alter or distort the truth.
Ibrahim's video clip shows him recalling behind-the-scenes incidents ahead of Anwar's dismissal from the government on Sept 2, 1998. It was recorded at an event organised by Tolak Individu Bernama Anwar Ibrahim, an NGO that rejected Anwar's political struggle.
Ibrahim said what was mentioned in the video was "not an accusation or a form of slander or political propaganda, or even an attempt to poke fun at anybody."
In fact, he said, he had only voiced out what really happened on the night of the Umno Supreme Council meeting which led to Anwar's dismissal that later turned into political turmoil between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his protégé, Anwar, that made them bitter foes to this day.
We are glad we have an individual like Ibrahim as a witness to the event and to reveal to us what really happened otherwise, we'll end up not knowing the truth about Anwar and Tun Mahathir at that crucial moment in Malaysian history.
