What exactly is a new year's resolution? Credit: anon

According to WebMD about 64% or two-thirds of people give up their New Year's resolutions within a month.

If you were in the 30% group who did not give up on your last year's resolutions, you are an exception.

You are the lucky ones because a majority tends to abandon theirs by the time February comes around.

There's a little cartoon that was shared on our WhatsApp chat group on New Year's day defining a resolution as "a to do list for the month of January."

Since we are still in the first week of January let's explore why your resolutions for this year may fail and how you may want to achieve them with greater success than in previous years.

I have often used this method on my mentees in my mentoring programs with great success.

Let's look at your goal and ask yourself is it specific enough for you to achieve it? Is it measurable? Is it achievable? Is it relevant for you?  Did you put a time frame on it? Or in other words, is your goal smart enough?

Have you ever heard of the expression SMART goals as used in management?

It stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound

Now examine your first goal that is right at the top of the list hanging on your bathroom door!

If your goal merely says "I want to lose weight!" that is not good enough because it is not specific. Neither is it measurable or achievable or time bound.

You have to be realistic because losing weight cannot be achieved naturally overnight.

You may want to make an adjustment to the kilos you planned to shed in 2023. Also, be realistic about the weight loss target itself. You cannot for instance set a target of being the weight of the person that you once were when in college or in school 10 years ago. Be realistic then slowly set a weekly target for a period of six months revising it as you go along until the end of the year.

But you have to develop strategies to make this happen. Exercise and dieting are two major strategies to reach the target set.

By doing this you'll be more motivated to keep to your resolution until the end of the year when you see each incremental step brings you results.

Do revise your goals to make sure they are SMART to help you attain the objectives that you set out for yourself this year. Otherwise, it'll be another year of resolutions unfulfilled.

Let me know if you need help to set your SMART goals to help you attain all your resolutions this year.
