A young couple confessed to neglecting their one-week-old baby boy during a hearing at the Sessions Court today. Nur Aisyah Azila Zairul Akmal, 21, and Muhammad Alhafiz Mukminin Mohd Noor, 24, admitted to the charges when presented before Judge Wan Suhaila Mohd.

The couple faced charges of neglecting their infant, which could have resulted in physical injury. The incident allegedly took place at a shop on Jalan Air Putih between 7am and 7:15am on May 18.

The charges were brought under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, with potential penalties outlined in Section 31(1) and read in conjunction with Section 34 of the Penal Code. These laws stipulate a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to 20 years of imprisonment, or both, for those convicted of such an offense.

Judge Wan Suhaila granted bail for each defendant at RM2,000 with one surety, scheduling the sentencing for May 28.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syairah Mohamad Razali represented the prosecution, while Nurul Farhana Shamsudin from the National Legal Aid Foundation defended the accused.

According to case details, the newborn was discovered shivering on the floor of a shop by a chicken truck driver at approximately 7:30am on May 18. The baby, weighing three kilograms, was born on May 12 at a house in Jabur Kubur. He was abandoned six days later at the shop. Authorities arrested the couple at two different locations on Monday.

The incident has drawn significant attention, highlighting the severe consequences of child neglect. The community has expressed concern over the well-being of the child and the circumstances leading to such a situation. The court’s decision on May 28 will determine the couple’s fate, potentially setting a precedent for similar cases in the future.

This case underscores the importance of child protection laws and the legal responsibilities of parents and guardians in ensuring the safety and well-being of their children.
