A young Mexico fan who went viral during the 2026 FIFA World Cup for wearing a Christmas sweater instead of an official team shirt now owns an official team shirt, thanks to social media and the support of El Tri fans.

Mexico began its World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11. However, it was a young supporter in the crowd who unexpectedly became the centre of attention.

Since he did not own an official Mexico kit, the boy showed his support by wearing a bright green Christmas jumper featuring Santa Claus on the front, along with white shorts and red boots.

TV cameras caught him celebrating Mexico’s goals with pure joy, and in no time the clip went viral.

Mexican broadcaster Claro Sports later shared the footage in an effort to identify the young fan. El Tri supporters joined the search, and the boy was eventually found and presented with a brand-new official Mexico jersey.

Netizens react:

A user wrote, “Faith in humanity gets restored little by little." Another commented, “I am loving all the videos surrounding the World Cup! Humans can be so great when we want to be." A third reacted, “Super cute! Only his jersey should’ve been a little bigger that way he can grow with it."
