A 24-YEAR-OLD woman was killed and her friend injured when the motorcycle they were riding skidded into a roadside drain following a collision with a car along Jalan Ismail, near Taman Laut, early this morning.
Mersing District Police Chief, Superintendent Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani, said the police were alerted to the incident at 12.05am.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that both the motorcycle and car were travelling in the same direction. The motorcyclist is believed to have attempted to overtake the car as it was making a right turn, but collided with the front of the vehicle before veering off the road into a drain,” he said in a statement today.
The impact of the crash caused the rider, a local woman, to sustain severe head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her pillion rider, a 23-year-old woman, suffered injuries to her left thigh and is currently receiving treatment at Mersing Hospital.
The 51-year-old driver of the car escaped the incident unharmed. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Meanwhile, Senior Fire Superintendent I Mohd Samsuri Shafai, Operations Commander from the Mersing Fire and Rescue Station, said they received an emergency call at 12.20am.
Two fire engines – a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit – along with eight personnel were dispatched to the scene, located approximately one kilometre from the station.
Motorcyclist feared drowned after collision near Bazar Karat in Johor Bahru
Separately in Johor Bharu, a man is feared to have drowned after reportedly falling into a tidal waterway following a motorcycle accident near Jalan Bazar Karat, close to the Pos Malaysia building, in Johor Bharu on Sunday night.
The Johor Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre (PGO) received an emergency call regarding the incident at 10.49pm, with the first response unit arriving at the scene six minutes later.
“Upon arrival, the Operations Response Team (PKO) found that a road traffic accident had occurred involving a Yamaha motorcycle and another motorcycle, the registration of which is yet to be identified, believed to have been flung into the canal,” the department said in a statement today.
One person is suspected to have fallen into the sea-connected drainage channel, while three other victims were taken to hospital before the rescue team’s arrival.
Search operations were carried out over a 30-metre stretch of the area, including three dives to a depth of 12 feet, but the missing individual has yet to be found.
The Yamaha motorcycle was successfully retrieved, and the operation concluded at 1.14am in cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police, who have taken over the case for further action.
The rescue effort involved 16 personnel from the Larkin and Skudai Fire and Rescue Stations, including members of the Water Rescue Team (PPDA). The operation was supported by one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, three Rapid Intervention Motorcycles (RIM), and a PPDA Hilux. - July 13, 2025
