Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh emphasized that Umno's strength and relevance hinge not on its top leadership but on the collective voice of its grassroots members. Speaking at the Tasek Gelugor Umno Youth delegates’ conference in Kubang Menerong, Akmal underscored the pivotal role of grassroots in steering the party through challenging times.
He asserted that Umno does not solely belong to its Supreme Council or wing chiefs but to all its members. This sentiment echoes amidst concerns over the party's recent electoral performance, where it secured only 26 parliamentary seats in contrast to 109 seats two decades ago.
Akmal highlighted the urgent need for grassroots members to assert their voices within the party hierarchy. He stressed that their candid feedback and constructive criticism are essential for Umno's resurgence and to prevent it from fading into political irrelevance.
"This party cannot be used as a shield to defend certain individuals," Akmal stated, emphasizing the importance of principled leadership and integrity within Umno. He emphasized that members should not blindly follow leaders but should speak out against wrongdoing and advocate for what is right.
Addressing criticism from Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam regarding his outspokenness, Akmal defended his stance, clarifying that differing opinions are vital for healthy internal discourse within the party. He emphasized that such diversity of views should be welcomed and respected, fostering an environment conducive to robust debate and progressive change.
"In Umno, we are taught to have principles and, most importantly, dignity," Akmal remarked, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the party's values while advocating for necessary reforms.
