In celebration of the YTL Group’s 70th anniversary, YTL Cement and YTL Hotels have unveiled the Penyu Shell-Ter Project, a nationwide art-meets-conservation initiative that blends creativity, environmentalism and community engagement.

Spearheaded by YTL Cement’s CSR platform, BUILDS, the project brings together 51 Malaysian artists and public figures to transform 70 handcrafted turtle sculptures into works of art. These unique sculptures will be displayed across YTL Hotels nationwide and later auctioned to raise funds for turtle conservation in Malaysia.

Expressive In Nature

Crafted from ECOCem, a sustainable low-carbon building material developed by YTL Cement’s Construction Development Laboratory, the turtles are not only symbols of artistic expression but also of ecological responsibility. The initiative has been endorsed by the National Art Gallery of Malaysia as a meaningful intersection of art, sustainability, and public engagement.

“As we mark 70 years of the YTL Group, we reflect on our legacy and look to the future we want to shape,” said Rachel Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL Cement. “The Penyu Shell-Ter Project highlights our commitment to local talent and environmental conservation, particularly for Malaysia’s endangered turtle species.

Building Awareness

Beyond its artistic appeal, the campaign aims to spark national conversations about biodiversity and environmental stewardship. Each sculpture will be showcased on the project’s official website, launching in October, with online bidding starting 15 October and culminating in a live auction on 25 November 2025.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit two leading organisations: the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS) and PULIHARA, both of which are actively working to protect turtle nesting beaches, operate hatcheries, and run education programmes in coastal communities.

A Good Cause

YTL Hotels, as the project’s venue sponsor, brings its own conservation credentials, notably through the Turtle Hatchery at Tanjong Jara Resort, which has protected over 110,000 turtle eggs and released around 84,000 hatchlings since 2016. Similar initiatives, such as coral and reef restoration efforts at Gaya Island Resort and Pangkor Laut Resort, further reflect the group’s dedication to marine preservation.

As part of the campaign, YTL Cement will also donate RM5,000 on behalf of each artist—totalling RM255,000—to charities selected by the participants, expanding the project’s social and environmental reach.
