KOTA BHARU – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is absent from the 72nd Pas Annual Muktamar here today, despite earlier expectations that he would attend the event.
Representing Umno was its secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Asyraf was attending on Zahid’s behalf, after the Umno president was unable to make it at the last minute.
“Zahid could not attend due to unavoidable circumstances,” he said at Pusat Tarbiyah Islam Kelantan (PUTIK).
Takiyuddin also thanked Umno leaders for accepting Pas' invitation, describing their presence as another significant moment in the country’s political landscape and reflecting efforts towards greater unity.
“The commitment shown by Umno leaders in joining us is another new historic moment in the country’s political landscape, reflecting our determination to realise the greater aspiration of public unity,” he said.
Takiyuddin added that reconciliation between two brothers who were in conflict strengthened the dignity of faith.
Zahid was earlier expected to attend the muktamar, with an Umno source yesterday confirming that he would be present.
Pas had invited Zahid and other Umno leaders to the muktamar as part of its engagement with Umno as a strategic cooperation partner.
Parti Wawasan Negara president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was also present at the muktamar.
The 72nd Pas Annual Muktamar is being held at PUTIK and is officiated by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
