Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has firmly defended his party’s involvement in the current unity government, stressing that the decision was made for national stability, not as a concession to long-time rival DAP. Addressing criticisms from opposition parties, Zahid emphasized that the collaboration was not an act of submission but a strategic alliance to ensure a stable and functioning administration.

Speaking during Umno’s 79th anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Zahid called out political opponents who have accused Umno of compromising its principles by working alongside DAP. He pointed out the irony in these accusations, noting that many of these critics themselves had previously formed alliances with DAP in earlier coalitions like Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat.

Zahid also highlighted the use of religious narratives by the opposition to cast doubt on Umno’s decisions. He claimed that these tactics were being employed to incite public distrust and undermine the unity government. Refuting the notion that Umno has lost its identity within the coalition, he drew comparisons to past alliances with parties like MCA and MIC, which were also criticized by some as religiously compromising. Yet, those collaborations were seen as part of Malaysia’s pluralistic political landscape, not betrayals of faith.

He reminded Umno members and the public that the current unity government was not the result of a secretive backroom deal, but a collective formation involving 18 political parties across different blocs—Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan, GPS, GRS, Warisan, and others. Zahid underlined that this broad-based cooperation was a response to the outcome of the 15th General Election, aimed at providing consistent leadership and avoiding political instability.

Turning inward, Zahid urged Umno members not to fall prey to divisive sentiments being amplified by the opposition. He reassured the party faithful that every major decision was made collectively by its leadership, not dictated by any single individual. Acknowledging that some choices might lead to temporary discomfort or criticism, he expressed confidence that the party’s integrity and mission would remain intact as long as it continued to enjoy the trust of its supporters.

In closing, Zahid encouraged party leaders and grassroots members to remain resilient, discard internal doubts, and focus on rebuilding unity and strength from within. He maintained that their collective voice and loyalty would be crucial in safeguarding Umno’s legacy and future.
