In the latest episode of "Zahid's Circus of Governance," Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament Hassan Abdul Karim and Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal have refused to be part of the grand spectacle orchestrated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid's brilliant proposal for a law guaranteeing a full government term has been met with the enthusiasm of a cat faced with a cucumber.
Hassan, the voice of reason in this theatre of absurdity, pointed out that Malaysia isn't playing the presidential game, where leaders are elected directly.
His concern?
Well, it's just a small matter of avoiding the potential pitfalls of a fixed government term, like, oh, I don't know, dictatorship and the joyous continuity of a corrupt government. Because who wouldn't want that?
But fear not, Zahid has a plan – to prevent prime ministerial musical chairs, citing the three PM swaps during the 14th Parliament. Clearly, the real issue in Malaysia is not corruption or mismanagement but the inconvenience of changing leaders.
In a dazzling display of legislative acrobatics, Hassan suggests amending the constitution to make sure the PM's popularity contest happens in Dewan Rakyat. Because nothing says "democracy" like a parliamentary pageant.
Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, ever the astute observer, sees Zahid's proposal for what it truly is – a "personal ploy." It's not about governance; it's about keeping the throne warm and cosy, especially when there's a looming threat of 47 legal charges. But, of course, hypocrisy is just another day at the office for Zahid.
In the dazzling climax of this political drama, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal supports any provision that prevents the gathering of statutory declarations, the nerve-wracking process of undermining the government through paperwork.
Because, let's face it, nothing spells stability like avoiding written expressions of no confidence.
In the surreal world of Malaysian politics, where stability is an illusion and power plays are as common as roadside stalls or warongs, Zahid's proposal takes centre stage. The audience, however, seems more interested in reality than political theatrics.
But fear not, the circus is far from over, and the show must go on – at the cost of political stability and sensible governance.
