Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has publicly questioned Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s justification for reappointing Tan Sri Azam Baki as Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), pointing out that the role demands more than personal courage. Zaid contended that the PM had mischaracterised the essential traits needed for such a powerful and sensitive position.

Rather than focusing on attributes like bravery, Zaid argued that the MACC chief must be someone who is suitable, professionally grounded, and appropriately aligned with institutional expectations. He underscored the immense authority wielded by the MACC head, highlighting how the position grants the power to freeze bank accounts for up to 90 days without court oversight, detain suspects with relative ease, and compel asset disclosures without having to disclose the specific offence under investigation.

The former minister drew parallels between Azam’s influence and that once held by former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, suggesting that such unchecked power must be entrusted to individuals with the utmost accountability and judicial restraint. He noted that the role is not only powerful but also highly desirable, with its security closely tied to the favour of the sitting prime minister.

Zaid took particular issue with the framing of Azam’s reappointment as an act of recognising bravery, especially in light of mounting criticism from various corners, including within Anwar’s own circle. Despite the Prime Minister’s assertion that Azam has demonstrated unusual courage in tackling high-profile corruption cases, the decision has sparked public backlash and reignited debates over transparency and institutional integrity.

Warning of the dangers of such concentrated authority, Zaid emphasised the potential for serious consequences when such powers are misapplied. Business operations and individual lives, he noted, could be irreparably harmed through account freezes and remands carried out without sufficient judicial oversight.

He concluded by urging the prime minister to reconsider the rhetoric used to defend the reappointment, suggesting that Malaysia deserves a MACC leadership built on credibility and ethical suitability rather than personal valor. In doing so, Zaid called for a deeper understanding of the responsibilities tied to the MACC chief’s office and the broader implications for the nation’s commitment to justice and reform.
