Lee Lam Thye urges authorities and communities to prioritise zero flood-related fatalities through stronger preparedness, early warnings and timely evacuations during the Northeast Monsoon
KUALA LUMPUR: Achieving zero flood-related fatalities must be a collective priority during the Northeast Monsoon season, with authorities and communities stepping up preparedness, coordination and preventive measures, said Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He said while heavy rainfall and flooding might be unavoidable, loss of life should not be accepted as inevitable, stressing the need for proactive preparedness, effective coordination and timely emergency response.
“ We must strive to ensure zero drownings, zero preventable deaths and zero avoidable tragedies throughout this monsoon season,” he said in a statement.
Lee said authorities must ensure flood-prone areas are identified, drainage systems maintained, evacuation centres prepared and emergency supplies sufficient, while rescue personnel and equipment must be ready for immediate deployment.
He also stressed the importance of closer coordination among the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Fire and Rescue Department, police, local authorities and other relevant agencies, particularly in strengthening early-warning systems, issuing timely flood alerts and carrying out evacuations when necessary.
The public, meanwhile, must avoid walking, riding or driving through floodwaters, stay away from rivers and waterways during heavy rainfall, and comply immediately with evacuation instructions.
Lee also urged communities to assist vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities, while ensuring that emergency supplies, essential medication, drinking water and important documents were readily available.
He said flood preparedness should not be regarded solely as the responsibility of the government and emergency responders, as individuals, families, communities and businesses also had an important role in preventing unnecessary loss of life.
Lee urged all relevant authorities to treat zero flood-related fatalities as an operational commitment requiring clear responsibilities, coordinated action, timely intervention and accountability at every level.
“Floods may be unavoidable, but preventable deaths must not be. Every life matters, and no effort should be spared to ensure that everyone remains safe throughout this monsoon season,” he said.
