Most people assume a country chooses the language spoken by the majority.
Indonesia did the opposite.
When Indonesia became independent in 1945, only about 5% of its people spoke Bahasa Indonesia as their mother tongue.
The largest ethnic group spoke Javanese.
Yet Indonesia chose Bahasa Indonesia as its national language anyway.
