The industry that quietly replaced tin in Ipoh

Ipoh was built on tin.

But when tin collapsed, the digging didn’t stop.

The industry simply moved from what was buried beneath the limestone hills… to the hills themselves.

Today, Perak produces almost half of Malaysia’s limestone. It helps make our roads, buildings, cement, paint, paper and even toothpaste.

But once one of these ancient hills is quarried away, it is gone forever.

So the real question is: how much of Ipoh’s landscape are we willing to lose in the name of development?
