Why Penang suddenly built these giant towers

If you’ve driven across the Penang Bridge recently, you’ve probably noticed these giant white towers in the sea.

They’re part of TNB’s RM500 million transmission project — 31 towers stretching 8.5km across the Penang Strait.

Penang already had submarine cables supplying electricity from the mainland. So why spend RM500 million building another connection?

Because Penang today needs far more electricity — and far more reliability — than the Penang of 40 years ago.
