Aston Villa manager Dean Smith admits to the anger of star Conor Hourihane.

The midfielder scored two goals for his side in the Carabao Cup against Crewe Alexandra.

However, his Villa boss admits that it was only two weeks ago when Hourihane was furious at being dropped against Bournemouth.

Speaking of his midfielder, Smith said to reporters: "[He didn't take it] very well [at being dropped].

"I don't want any of the players to be happy that they're not playing and he certainly wasn't.

"I brought Douglas in for the Bournemouth game but, what he's done, is knuckle down in training, got on with his job. He's a great professional and an international for a reason. He'll have a big part to play this season. I've just put Douglas in front of him at the moment.

"The only thing that surprised me about Conor's performance tonight was he didn't get his hat-trick with the free-kick."
