Kota Kinabalu: Police have detained 12 individuals, including seven female Chinese nationals, in connection with an alleged “Chinese medium” scam that resulted in losses of approximately RM600,000, Info X reported.
Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azhar Hamin said the suspects—10 women and two men—were arrested during coordinated raids across Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Keningau, and Kota Belud last Saturday and Sunday.
He explained that the syndicate typically approached victims offering traditional medicine, fortune-telling, and bad luck removal rituals before tricking them into handing over cash or jewellery.
“The money or jewellery would then be secretly swapped or replaced with worthless items placed inside a bag,” he said.
Police also seized 13 mobile phones, 13 SIM cards, seven passports, five vehicles, and roughly RM20,000 in various foreign currencies. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
