
SANDAKAN: Residents of this district have been advised to look after the cleanliness of their house compounds following a spike in dengue fever cases here lately.
For the record, as of August 2, there is cumulative of 2,567 cases of dengue fever with three deaths in Sabah, of which two were in Sandakan.
At the same time, Sandakan is in second place State-wide with a total of 505 cases.
A total of 18 localities in Sandakan have been classified as dengue fever zone, namely Taman Permata Satu, Lupak Meluas, Taman Sibuga, Kampung Forest (Jambatan DEF), Taman Nuri, Flat Taman Sejati, Taman Megah, Taman Mawar-Ramin, Taman Puteri Indah, Taman Rajawali, Kampung Tinusa 2 (Darat), Kampung Lupak Meluas Darat, Taman Fulliwa, Sri Taman, Kampung Bokara, Karamunting Baru, Kem PGA Batu 10 and Pekan Sibuga.
Sabah DAP Secretary Liau Fui Fui said the increase in dengue cases should make the residents more aware of its danger and cooperate with each other to make their environment safer and cleaner.
“I urge Sandakan residents to be more conscious of the threat posed by dengue and take precautionary measures,” he said.
He added that among the steps to be taken are to make sure that there are no containers lying around the houses which can store water where mosquitoes can breed. Long grasses should also be cut.
Liau also urged the local authority to take positive steps to look after public places where mosquitoes are likely to breed.
