19yo M’sian Arrested in Macau for Attempting to Smuggle ~RM4.7 Million Worth of Cannabis Buds

A 19-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at the Macau International Airport by Judiciary Police on Thursday (25 September), after he was discovered to have an estimated value of MOP9 million (~RM4.7 million) worth of cannabis buds that he had planned to smuggle into Hong Kong.

According to a report by The Macau Post Daily, the Malaysian national was allegedly hired to smuggle the cannabis buds from Bangkok to Hong Kong. His journey consisted of a layover in South Korea and then Macau, where he was ultimately arrested.

A spokesperson for the Judiciary Police, Ho Wai Lok, explained that, after evaluating information they had gathered regarding the possibility of someone smuggling drugs on the flight from South Korea to Macau, they managed to discover the Malaysian man as he was collecting his luggage after his flight had landed at 2 PM.

In his luggage, they found 16 bags of cannabis buds weighing in at 8.9 kg in total.

 

They are now looking for those who hired the Malaysian

The Judiciary Police are also taking the time to investigate exactly where the drugs came from and are tracing those involved in this case, including those who hired the Malaysian man and promised him an amount of MOP9,500 (~RM4,900) should he successfully smuggle the drugs into Hong Kong.

The Malaysian man, who is facing a drug trafficking charge, has since been sent to the Public Prosecutions Office for further investigations.
