
The Counter Intelligence (CI) wing of Punjab police, Amritsar, has arrested two brothers and recovered 5.5 kg heroin along with four pistols and 10 live cartridges from their possession.
The arrested accused has been identified as Bobby Singh and Harjit Singh, both residents of Rokhe village in Ajnala. Police also impounded their motorcycle used for transporting drugs and weapons.
Director General Punjab Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said as per preliminary investigations that the duo was in contact with a cross-border smuggler and were allegedly receiving consignments of drugs and weapons for further distribution in Punjab.
The DGP said the CI wing had received specific information that the accused were on their way to deliver a consignment of arms and ammunition near Kale Ghanupur village on the Amritsar bypass highway.
Acting on the tip-off, police teams laid a trap in the area and intercepted the duo while they were travelling on the motorcycle. During the search, four pistols and 10 live cartridges were seized.
During further questioning, accused Bobby Singh allegedly disclosed the location of a heroin consignment, leading police to recover 5.5 kg heroin from Bhaka Tara Singh village.
Police said further investigations are underway to trace forward and backward linkages of the network and identify other associates connected with the smuggling module.
A case has been registered under Sections 25, 25(1)(a) and 25(8) of the Arms Act, Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 21 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station here.
