20 Filipino trafficking victims return from Cambodia

(UPDATE) THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced Friday the safe repatriation of 20 Filipino human trafficking victims from Cambodia.

In a statement, the agency said the repatriation was in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s orders to ensure the protection and welfare of overseas Filipino workers in situations of distress.

The 20 arrived at Terminal 1 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on board a flight from Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The DMW said the repatriation was made possible through coordination with the Migrant Workers Office in Singapore and the Philippine embassy in the Cambodian capital.

“Upon arrival, they received assistance to ensure their recovery and reintegration, including financial and welfare support from the DMW and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and legal assistance from the DMW-Migrant Workers Protection Bureau and the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking Task Force. The Bureau of Immigration and NAIA Task Force Against Trafficking also extended airport assistance,” the statement read.

The DMW said Filipinos should be wary of overseas job offers in information technology and customer service through apps promising high salaries, noting these could make them end up working in scam hubs in Cambodia and Thailand.
