PENAMPANG: A total of 22 participants took part in the football referee basic course (series 1) organised by the Penampang District Football Referees Association at the Penampang Sports Complex recently.
Its secretary Freddy Pamaas said the two-day course was conducted by former Fifa referee Salim Limbai and former FAM referee Juin Joseph.
According to him, the main objective of the course is to produce more young referees in the district and also groom those with potential to a higher level.
“We believe apart from learning the latest rules in football, those taking part may get to generate some side income as referees in the future,” he said.
He added that they are hoping to see more women referees involved in the sport.
Meanwhile, the closing ceremony was officiated by Sabah Football Association (Safa) Penampang deputy chairman Raymond Ramp, who is also the district’s referees association chairman.
