Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce explained axing Sean Longstaff for defeat at Norwich City.
Longstaff came off the bench to provide an assist for Jonjo Shelvey with the former England midfielder netting a consolation goal.
Bruce said, "I am trying to protect the lad. He has had a wonderful rise, we have to protect him as he had a serious injury."
Joelinton picked up a hip injury during the 3-1 defeat.
Bruce said: "It's a hip injury. We'll do X-rays and scans.
"He's took a nasty one to the side."
