KUNAK: More than 4,000 participants took part in the Fun Run, here, in conjunction with the Tawau Division National Sports Day celebrations, reflecting strong community support for sports and healthy living.
Youth, Sports Development and Creative Economy Assistant Minister Datuk Seri Anil Sandhu, who is also Kunak Assemblyman, said the event helps strengthen sporting culture among the public and supports talent development, especially among youths.
Besides the Fun Run, other sports were contested, while government agencies set up exhibitions and a lucky draw was held.
Plans to build a Sports Complex in Kunak is also moving forward, with funds for the project already approved.
However, the Ministry is still waiting for a response from SD Guthrie on its application for the proposed land site.
Implementation depends on the company’s agreement and approval, including the amount of compensation to be paid for the acquisition of the agricultural land near Pekan Kunak. The process also involves the status of the land and the requirements set for it before the next steps can be taken.
“We are waiting for the response. We are trying our best,” he told reporters after the National Sports Day launching ceremony at Padang Pekan Kunak.
The complex is expected to boost sports development on the east coast, particularly in Kunak and give more youths space and opportunities to develop their talent and take part in a wider range of sports.
Anil also said allocations under Budget 2027, tabled in Parliament on Friday, would benefit youths greatly, including in sports development and the creative economy.
He said the most important thing was ensuring every announced allocation was implemented effectively so that target groups feel the benefits.
“The budget is good enough. In detail, we want to see the implementation, including for the less well-off target groups. We hope the allocations will benefit all levels of society,” he said.
