KENINGAU: Police have received 62 reports since 2024 over alleged land sale scams involving 19 parent land titles, resulting in the opening of 12 investigation papers under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
Keningau Police Chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said the reports were lodged following allegations of cheating in land sale transactions.
He said that before the issue went viral on social media, police had received only 22 reports involving nine parent land titles.
The figure, he added, was far lower than claims circulating on social media that more than 50 police reports had already been lodged at the time.
“Based on the initial 22 reports, four investigation papers were opened and investigated thoroughly,” he said in a statement.
Following wider public awareness after the issue gained traction on social media, Yampil said police received another 40 reports involving 10 additional parent land titles.
The latest reports resulted in eight more investigation papers being opened.
“In total, the Keningau District Police Headquarters (IPD) is now handling reports involving 19 parent land titles, with 62 police reports officially registered,” he said.
Yampil said all 12 investigation papers were being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for alleged cheating involving land sale transactions.
He stressed that investigations into all reports are ongoing in accordance with the law.
