7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

During the summer break, the garden can soon become a tedious hangout space for children, while constant trips to the leisure centre or waterparks can quickly become costly. If you want your kids to spend more time outdoors while cooling off in the heat, the best paddling pools are a no brainer — brilliant value for money, easy to set up and guaranteed to keep little ones entertained.

Paddling pools have come a long way since the first inflatable home pool of the 1950s. You’ll now find all kinds of thrills and spills, from jet soakers and built-in slides to fountains, games and full paddling play centres.

Splashing around in the paddling pool is not only a great screen-free activity, but also keeps children active, helps burn off excess energy and builds water confidence. From small pools for babies and toddlers to larger play centres for older children, there’s something to suit every age, budget and garden space.

To help you pick wisely, I put a wide range of paddling pools to the test during the recent heatwave. Grab your air pump, kids’ suncream and swimwear — here are my top paddling pool picks for 2026.

Sunclub whale 3D spray pool

Rating: 4.5/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: paddling pool overall

Why we love it

  • Fun whale design
  • Tail sprays water when connected to hose pipe
  • Quick to drain and deflate

Take note

  • Takes a long time to fill and can’t be half-filled

On a hot summer’s day with the kids, this is the best twenty quid you can spend. We had a range of ages in and out of the Sunclub whale 3D spray pool and the smiles and laughter didn’t stop until the sun came down.

A traditional circular shape, the fun whale detailing adds to its appeal, while the tail shoots into action once a hose pipe is connected. I was impressed by the durability of this pool and it certainly feels robust enough to provide fun all summer long.

This compact paddling pool works well for a range of ages (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

While this pool is much easier to inflate than some of the others we tested – there are only two chambers to pump up: top ring and whale tail – you’ll need to put aside some time to fill it, as it takes more than 1,100l at the recommended 80 per cent capacity. And you can’t cut corners with this one, because the water is what holds its whale shape. This does mean that when you want to just half-fill the pool, it doesn’t quite reach the mark.

There’s a drainage valve for easy water removal, and it deflates in a doddle.

Chad Valley inflatable dino themed play centre

Rating: 4/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: paddling pool for smaller gardens

Why we love it

  • Lots of extra features
  • Space for multiple toddlers

Take note

  • Slide isn't easy to use for younger kids
  • Takes longer to inflate than others

A volcano that shoots water, an inflatable slide, a dino ball structure and blow up rings, and that’s before you’ve even got to the paddling pool. One thing’s for sure, this Chad Valley dino themed play centre will make your kids roar with laughter on a hot summer’s afternoon.

This pool offers just the right amount of paddling space for a couple of young children (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

As much as I can praise the extra detailing on this paddling pool, it comes at a set-up cost, with each chamber that needs pumping. While you won’t need much water, you will need to allow some inflation time.

My toddler testers loved the water jetting, throwing the balls, tossing the rings and splashing around. But the slide was sadly a little lost on them as they weren’t quite big enough to clamber on top, and there are no steps to assist, which made it redundant.

Nevertheless this pool offers just the right amount of paddling space for a couple of young children, without taking over your decking, has bucket loads of child appeal, and feels robust to handle general chaos.

Bestway rainbows 'n' rays inflatable paddling pool with play centre

Rating: 4/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: square paddling pool

Why we love it

  • User-friendly shape
  • Extra toy accessories
  • Straightforward to inflate

Take note

  • Slightly pricier than others

This play centre paddling pool from Bestway has been thoughtfully designed. The square shape offers plenty of paddling space with additional extras around the edge, rather than eating into the splashable section in the middle. There are a handful of chambers to pump, but it’s straightforward to set-up. Plus, because of the low level of water, it was ready to use before boredom kicked in.

This model brings the fun-factor (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

The design had instant appeal from my toddler testers. The slide was well propped by the outer ring of the pool making it the most usable out of those we tested, while the rainbow arch with sprinkler made a great way to enter and exit the pool (on repeat!).

You’ll also get three balls to push in the holes in the cloud, and a small blow up beach ball. While this paddling pool is a little more expensive than the other play-centre styles I tested, it’s durable, brings the fun-factor with the added extras but also gives toddlers plenty of unrestricted splashing space.

Hapello crocodile fun play centre

Rating: 3.5/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: paddling pool with a fun design

Why we love it

  • Unique crocodile shape
  • Extra blow-up toys included
  • Fun water spray features

Take note

  • Needs space
  • Limited paddling area
  • Takes longer to inflate than others

I wouldn’t usually recommend welcoming a crocodile into your garden with young children around, but here’s the exception. The Hapello crocodile fun play centre offers thrills and spills to those aged two and above. You’ll need to set aside some time to pump up the separate sections, including the slide, but it’s a shallow pool so it doesn’t require much filling.

The croc’s mouth also sprays water on the tail, which doubles as a slide (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

While we adored the shape, be mindful of the size as it’s quite long from tail to mouth. In the box you’ll also get a few blow-up toys, with a fishing net to catch the two inflatable puffy fish, and two fish-shaped rings to play ring toss on the pointy teeth, a nice touch for added interactive play.

The croc’s mouth sprays water on the tail, which doubles as a slide, although my testers much preferred getting themselves soaked. There’s a drain valve to release the water, but as with setting up this pool there are separate chambers to deflate, which takes extra time.

Chad Valley 4ft dino shade paddling pool

Rating: 4.5/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: paddling pools for babies

Why we love it

  • Shaded canopy design
  • Easy to set-up
  • Comfy cushioned base

Take note

  • Limited age use

The canopy-style paddling pools for young splashers are a godsend on balmy days, keeping little ones shaded while they enjoy a kick about in the shallow water. With minimal effort required with inflating and a low depth, assembly is a doddle.

For a summer with a baby, this is a garden staple (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

The cushioned base is gentle on toddlers' feet, crawling hands and knees or baby’s bums and the playful stegosaurus shape gives it plenty of kid appeal. Because of its size you’re unlikely to use this much after around two years, but for a summer with a baby it’s a garden staple and an inexpensive way to entertain water babies. There isn’t a valve for easy drainage, but given the water capacity it’s straightforward to put away and save for another day.

Infantino whale inflatable bath/pool

Rating: 3.5/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: travel-friendly paddling pool

Why we love it

  • Multi-use as a baby bath and paddling pool
  • Heat indicator

Take note

  • Limited age use

The Infantino whale inflatable pool is a little different from traditional paddling pools, as it’s primarily designed to be an inflatable bath usable from when your baby is sitting unaided. But if you’re looking for baby’s first foray into the world of pools, it’s rather genius.

It comes with 10 coloured balls for extra play, and there’s a jingle to the whale’s tail (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

Fitting in most bath tubs to create a safe bathing space, this is equally at home in the garden in a shaded spot. Depending on your baby’s size (it was too small for my toddler to sit in), there’s limited space for splashing. Although my youngest tester managed to kick her legs with glee.

It comes with 10 coloured balls for extra play, and there’s a jingle to the whale’s tail. While it’s less useful when using it for a paddling pool, there’s also a built-in temperature sensor reassuring parents for when the water is too hot. If you’re on the hunt for a quick cooling fix during a heatwave, this is brilliant.

Chad Valley dinosaur themed splash pad

Rating: 4/5

Image from: 7 best paddling pools to keep kids cool and entertained this summer

Best: splash pad

Why we love it

  • Easy to set-up
  • Budget friendly
  • Fun sprinkler feature

Take note

  • Uses constant water

A splash pad is a brilliant addition to an outdoor space when you don’t have the time, space or energy for a paddling pool set up. Simply connect your garden hose, wait a moment for the outer ring to reach capacity and watch the sprinklers in action, shooting water up around 30in off the ground.

The dinosaur shape and design is bound to be a win for youngsters (Rebecca Moore/The Independent)

All ages loved the thrill of this splash pad, particularly when it came to stomping on the outer ring and watching the water rocket. When we’d had enough of the squealing I turned the sprinklers off and there was a lovely shallow body of water in the middle where my toddler could splash and play.

It’s worth being mindful of the water consumption with this product, and you may also find that sprinkler effectiveness is down to your water pressure (thankfully, mine is high). The dinosaur shape and design is bound to be a win for young prehistoric enthusiasts, while the easy packing away and minimal storage space required gets a thumbs-up from parents.

What is the best paddling pool?

I’d happily welcome all of the pools I’ve featured here for a summer-long vacation in my garden, but the best paddling pool I’ve tested has to be the Sunclub whale 3D spray pool. It’s a fun design kids will love, with a water spray whale tale, and it offers great value for money. Compared with some other options, it also takes up less space and is easier to inflate.

How I tested paddling pools

During a rather convenient heatwave I dug out the pump (you’ll need a high-power electric air pump for most paddling pools), gathered a range of young testers ready to cool off and put a selection of paddling pools to the test. Under scrutiny were the following criteria:
